You want me to what?
Random library snap? I don’t remember taking this, actually, lol… But there’s a story to follow so I may as well post it. I do curricular peer support four times weekly. One of the classes I take is a first year English group (who are incredibly well-behaved and one of the top classes in terms of ability), who I see twice weekly - once on Tuesdays for reading work and on Wednesdays for library visits. I’m very thankful for this class as it means I get to visit the library once weekly and can relax and get to know the kids a bit better. Plus the library is really pretty and is always cosy so it’s nice. And as you can see, they have green chairs. That’s always a good thing. But the class teacher (who is also my own teacher for the literary study side of English - and she’s a damn good teacher, I’ll tell you that. Amazing woman!) said to me today that she wasn’t making as best use of me as she could… So she made a proposal. Basically, for the rest of the year, I’m going to be the head of a project for this class. We’re going to write a Tolkien-inspired fantasy novel (I’m assuming this is because of one young lady in particular who has been reading The Hobbit) and she wants me to guide them in universe design, illustration, cover design… Basically, the lot. So for the rest of the year I’m going to be helping a group of twenty or so eleven and twelve year olds collectively write a novel. WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE HOW EXCITED I AM OH MY GOD THIS IS THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN SO FAR THIS YEAR AHHHHHH In honesty, the whole thing is a bit surreal, because I only wrote my first lengthy piece of work last year (a novella), so to be guiding a group of young people in writing their own will be a challenge, but one I’m more than up for. Ahh but seriously… When she said Tolkien-esque universe the Fellowship soundtrack started playing in my head and the shire was everywhere and EVERYTHING WAS BEAUTIFUL AND NOTHING HURT. I feel awkward at the same time, though… I haven’t read The Hobbit and an eleven year old has beaten me to it (although it’s on my Kindle waiting to be read before the end of the year. I’ll be damned if I watch The Hobbit before reading the book). The movies, though, when I watch them, are awful because I get totally obsessed with them for a good while. I remember after seeing the trilogy when I was younger writing my own version with a female protagonist. It was about three pages long and got deleted, but, hey, I tried. There’s something seriously captivating about that universe though. So looking forward to this now. I can imagine this is either going to seem extremely exciting for them or extremely daunting. But hey, if Mrs H thinks I can do it then why the hell not? Let’s write this novel! (Also there are only 5 boys in the whole class. If the girls think they’re going to get away with writing princess stories they can think again, haha) POST DETAILS: Served up on January/18/2012 POST NOTES:
